What Happens If a Class Has No "Promotes To" Set at Rollover
This is one of those gotchas that only bites once, at the worst possible time — during the one rollover a year a school runs, on a class nobody thought to double-check.
The actual behavior
For every active student, the rollover wizard looks at their CURRENT class's "Promotes to" setting to suggest what happens next. If that class has a "Promotes to" target, the suggestion is "promote" to that class. If it doesn't — whether because this is genuinely your school's final, graduating class, or simply because nobody set it — the suggestion is exactly the same either way: "graduate."
If you don't personally override every student in that class before confirming, every active student there gets their status set to graduated (with graduated_at stamped) the moment you run the rollover — a full exit from active status, not a harmless no-op and not "left in place" for later cleanup.
How to protect yourself
Before your first rollover of the year, open School → Academic Structure and check every class's "Promotes to" field deliberately — don't assume it's wired just because the class has existed for a while.
02Remember that Fees101 only auto-wires a class's "Promotes to" when you ADD a brand-new class, and only if the previous class didn't already have an explicit choice set (see Setting Up Classes and the Promotion Chain).
Classes brought in via CSV import, or added out of the usual order, can genuinely end up with no promotion target wired at all.
In the rollover wizard itself, read the per-student promotion preview for every class group, not just the ones you expect trouble from — an unexpected "graduate" suggestion on a class that should promote is the signal to override it to "repeat" or the correct target class before confirming.
