Resetting a Staff Member's Password (Admin-Initiated)

This is the admin side of a password problem — what you do on a teammate's behalf when THEY can't remember their password. If it's your own password you've forgotten, you don't need anyone's help — see Logging In, Logging Out, and Resetting Your Own Password.

Resetting someone else's password

01

Go to Team → Users.

02

Open the staff member's record.

03

Choose Reset password.

This sends the exact same Supabase password-recovery email a self-service "Forgotten password" request would — there's no separate admin-only reset flow under the hood, just a different person triggering it. The teammate follows the emailed link to set a new password themselves; you never see or set the password for them directly.

The reset is logged to the audit log, naming who triggered it and for whom — see Using the Audit Log.

Changing a login email instead

A forgotten password and a wrong/outdated login email are different problems with different fixes. To change what email someone signs in with, use Change login email from the same staff record (not Reset password) — see Adding Staff and Changing Their Role for the cap-delegation and owner-protection rules that apply to it.

Changing a teammate's login email as an admin skips Supabase's usual double-opt-in confirmation step — appropriate here because you, the admin, have already verified who the new email belongs to, unlike a self-service change where the account holder is confirming their own address. A notice goes to both the OLD and NEW address the moment it happens, so neither side is taken by surprise.

Gotchas

You can't reset your own password this way — Reset password is for a teammate's account, not yours. If it's your own, use the "Forgotten password" link from the sign-in screen instead.

Resetting a password requires Manage Team, the same permission used to invite staff and assign roles — it is not restricted to the owner the way changing someone's role or designing a role is.
