Linking Siblings to a Family Account

Siblings are linked automatically by matching parent phone numbers when a student is added — but Fees101 won't auto-link two students into one family on a name mismatch alone, since that's exactly how discount abuse happens.

How the automatic matching works

When you add a student, their parent's phone number is normalized (0803…, +234803…, and 234803… are treated as the same number) and checked against every existing family on file. If it matches an existing family and the parent name also matches, the new student is linked to that family automatically — no extra step.

If the phone number matches an existing family but the parent name you entered doesn't match the name on file, Fees101 stops and asks you to explicitly confirm the link before proceeding. This is deliberate — it's the safeguard against a mistyped or reused phone number quietly linking two unrelated families (and granting a sibling discount neither family should get).

Managing a family's shared account

01

Go to Students → Family Accounts to see every family, filterable by whether their shared virtual account (DVA) is on or off, with search.

02

Open a family's drawer to see all of their linked children.

03

From a student's profile, use the family DVA toggle to turn a shared account on or off for the whole family.

Turning a family's shared virtual account OFF closes it at the provider — this is not reversible. Turning it back ON mints a brand-new account number, not the same one as before, so make sure any parent who's been paying into that account is told the number changed.

Moving credit between siblings

If one sibling has unapplied credit on their account and another sibling in the same family has an open invoice, use Reallocate Family Credit from the student profile to move it across. The move is atomic, applies automatically to the recipient's open invoice, and notifies the parent. See How Credit Balance Works for where this credit actually comes from in the first place.
