Managing Academic Sessions (Academic Years)

A session is your academic year — the top level of the structure that terms sit inside. Fees101 keeps exactly one session active at a time, deliberately, so there's never ambiguity about which year current activity belongs to.

Creating a session

01

Go to School → Academic Structure.

02

Next to "Current session," click EDIT — this opens the Current session panel.

03

Click + New session.

04Enter a session name (e.g.

"2027/2028"), a start date, and an end date.

05

Click Create session.

This form doesn't ask for a status (draft vs. active) — creating a session here doesn't make it current on its own, and it doesn't move any students up a class either. If you're starting a new academic year, use Year-End Rollover instead (see Running Year-End Rollover) — it promotes students and can create the new session for you in one step.

To actually make a session current, select it from the Current session panel's "Choose one" list and save. Activating a session automatically closes whichever one was previously active — you don't need to close the old one yourself first.

In practice, most schools never create a session this way at all — Create Term (Fees → Cycles) has its own inline "New session" option right on the term form, so the usual path is creating your first term and letting it create the session for you in the same step. See Creating, Activating, and Closing Terms.

Gotchas

A closed session can never be reactivated. If you close one by mistake, you'll need to create a new session rather than reopening the old one — so double-check before closing.
