Setting Up Classes and the Promotion Chain
Classes are the backbone of both your fee structure (fees are usually set per class) and year-end rollover (every class needs to know what it promotes into). Setting them up right once saves a lot of manual work every session after.
Adding or editing a class
Go to School → Academic Structure.
Next to "Classes," click MANAGE — this opens the Classes panel.
Click + Add class (or the edit option on an existing one).
Enter the class name — it must be unique per school (checked case-insensitively, so "JSS 1" and "jss 1" count as the same name).
Choose a section, or leave it as "No section" — sections are entirely optional, and if you haven't created any yet, the form tells you so and lets you proceed without one.
Set the display order (lower numbers appear first in lists).
07Set "Promotes to" — the class a student in this class moves to at year-end rollover.
Leave it as "Exits school (graduates)" if this is your final/graduating class.
Click Add class to save.
How the promotion chain wires itself
When you add a new class, Fees101 automatically sets the previous class's "promotes into" to point at the new one — but only if that previous class didn't already have an explicit choice set. It never overwrites a promotion target you've deliberately chosen.

Required columns are class_name and display_order; section is optional and can be left blank for no section. Fees101 validates that names and display orders are unique, then re-sorts and rewires the entire promotion chain after the import finishes — so it's safe to import a full class list in one go rather than wiring each class's promotion target by hand afterward.
